If you are a candidate for dentures, you may receive a complete or a partial set, depending on the extent of your tooth loss.

Complete dentures fall into two categories: “immediate” and “conventional.” Conventional dentures are crafted and placed about ten to twelve months after all teeth have been removed, to allow the gums time to heal. Immediate dentures, on the other hand, can be positioned immediately after removing the teeth. Despite the advantage they present, immediate dentures may require more extensive fittings because bone and gums may shrink and change shape during the healing period. In most cases, immediate dentures should be considered temporary.

Partial dentures consist of replacement teeth set into a pink gum-like frame attached to the inside of the mouth by a metal clasp. A dentist will recommend a partial denture when the patient has one or more healthy teeth remaining. A partial denture fills in the gaps in the mouth and prevents other teeth from shifting their positions.

In some cases, dental implants may be preferable to dentures. Though the cost is greater, implants present a more natural appearance and are increasingly becoming a treatment of choice.
